MBBR Wastewater Treatment System
Product Overview
The MBBR (Moving Bed Bioreactor) system is a compact, robust biological process for treating municipal and industrial wastewater. Free-moving plastic carriers provide a large protected surface where micro-organisms break down organic pollutants.
Working Principle
Wastewater enters an aerated reactor filled with floating biofilm carriers. The biofilm degrades organic matter (BOD/COD) and, with suitable zones, nitrogen. Because biomass is fixed on the carriers, no return-sludge recirculation is needed and the process tolerates load fluctuations.
Key Features
- Free-moving biofilm carriers with high protected surface area
- No sludge recirculation required
- Compact footprint with easy capacity upgrades
- Stable under variable and shock loads
Advantages
- Easy retrofit into existing tanks
- Resilient to flow and load variation
- Lower operating complexity
- Scalable by adjusting carrier fill ratio

Technical Specifications
Indicative typical ranges to guide planning. Exact parameters are engineered and confirmed for each project based on your flow rate, influent quality and target discharge standard.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Treatment capacity (m³/day) | 10 – 10,000 m³/day (modular) |
| Influent quality (BOD / COD / SS) | BOD 150–600 / COD 300–1,200 / SS 150–500 mg/L |
| Target effluent standard | BOD ≤20, COD ≤60, SS ≤20 mg/L (reuse-ready with polishing) |
| Process type | Attached-growth biofilm (aerobic; optional anoxic for N removal) |
| Footprint / installation | Compact — up to ~40% smaller than conventional activated sludge |
| Power supply | ≈0.4–0.8 kWh/m³ (aeration-dependent) |
| Material of construction | Carbon steel (epoxy) / SS304–316 / GRP / concrete tank |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does MBBR need sludge return?
No. The active biomass grows on the carriers, so MBBR does not rely on return-activated-sludge recirculation.
Can MBBR be added to an existing plant?
Yes. Carriers and aeration can be retrofitted into existing tanks to increase capacity.
What effluent quality can MBBR achieve?
With suitable design and downstream polishing it can meet common municipal discharge standards; exact targets are confirmed per project.
