Wastewater treatment is the process of removing physical, chemical and biological contaminants from used water so it can be safely discharged to the environment or reused. A typical system combines preliminary screening, primary settling, biological treatment that breaks down organic pollutants, and final disinfection. The exact configuration depends on where the water comes from and the discharge standards that apply.

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) treatment relies on thousands of small plastic carriers that float freely inside an aerated tank. Beneficial bacteria grow as a thin biofilm on the surface of these carriers and consume the organic load in the wastewater. Because the carriers keep moving with the aeration, the process delivers a large, protected surface area in a compact footprint and adapts well to changing flow and load.

Almost any operation that discharges process or sanitary water needs treatment before release. Common sectors include municipal utilities, food and beverage processing, textiles, hospitals and healthcare, hotels and resorts, mining and remote camps, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, and large residential or commercial developments. Each industry has its own pollutant profile, so the equipment is engineered to match.

Start with the design flow rate and the quality of the incoming sewage, then confirm the discharge or reuse standard you must meet. From there, weigh the available footprint, the level of automation you want, energy and sludge-handling costs, and how much the load is likely to vary. Packaged or containerized plants suit decentralized sites, while larger civil-built plants fit high-capacity municipal projects.

Cost depends mainly on treatment capacity, the technology selected (such as MBBR, MBR or DAF), the required effluent quality and the degree of automation. Small packaged units are far less expensive than large custom-engineered plants, and ongoing energy, chemical and maintenance costs also factor into the total.
